The Objective
Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, Massachusetts worked with Kitchen Energy Solutions to help increase energy savings despite multiple hoods being connected to their single exhaust fan.

With typical DCKV systems, the fans would need to be commanded to full speed any time cooking activity was detected to ensure that no smoke/temperature rolled out of any of the hoods. This kitchen layout included newer hoods that had been integrated with an old existing main cookline for a total of nine large exhaust hoods.

Our team was left to determine how energy savings could be achieved with this multiple hood-single fan layout.

Estimated Preliminary Analysis

Average New Fan Speed55%
Electrical Savings (Kilowatt-Hour/Year)115,698 kWhper Year
Electrical Savings ($/Year)$23,355.00per Year
Heating Savings ($/Year)$14,052.00per Year
Cooling Savings ($/Year)$346.00per Year
Payback Timeline1.5 yearsROI

Values below are based on 15 hours of Runtime per Day with a Total Controlled CFM of 23,900.

The Solution
ECOAZUR® was the perfect solution for Beatty Dining Hall at Wentworth, offering the ability to retrofit modulating dampers on all hoods in combination with the ECOAZUR® optic and temperature sensors, ultimately maximizing the energy savings in their kitchen.

Although ducts had changed shape and warped over time, Kitchen Energy Solutions was able to customize dampers to ensure that no existing ductwork or hoods in the space needed any alterations. ECOAZUR® was fully integrated with Beatty Dining Hall’s BAS system allowing information to be gathered by facility staff in real time.

Wentworth is now achieving energy savings that surpass the initial projections and will be enjoying these savings for years to come. Note the exhaust fans now never reach 100% speed!
